From 1873 many of the type 1a were fitted with a timber upper superstructure providing doorways but no doors or windows. These are referred to as Type 1b, or sometimes as the Open Halfside coach. The evidence suggests that they had all gone, or at least had ceased to be used as quarrymen's cars, by 1887. None of these vehicles survive.
